Is the Best Fish Oil, Pure Fish Oil? Making Sense of the Marketing Confusion

Marketing Confusion is Everywhere

Don't you hate all the confusion that surrounds the so-called best fish oil?

  • Ours is better than yours is,
  • Ours comes from the cleanest waters on the planet
  • Ours has the highest potency
  • You need a blend of omega 3 fatty acids
  • Molecular differentiation is better than molecular distillation

What is the real truth about the best fish oil and pure fish oil?

Why a Pure fish oil is needed

There is little doubt that an omega 3 fish oil supplement is needed for good health. Just do a Google search on fish oil benefits and you will find a plethora of studies testifying to the many benefits of fish oil especially in the areas of heart and brain health.

Couple that with the fact that omega 3's are an essential nutrient and are deficient in your diet unless you are an Eskimo living in Alaska where your diet consists of lots of fish.

Out of this need, many fish oil products have been created. To sell these products lots of marketing strategies, some true, some half-truths and some flat out misrepresentations, all right let's call it what it really is - lies have arisen.

Let's look at the issues mentioned above:

  1. Molecular differentiation is better than molecular distillation because of the temperature used with distillation.

Because omega 3's are unsaturated fats, high temperatures quickly breakdown the fat and cause it to go rancid. In other words, the once healthy fat has now become a trans fat. No doubt about it, this is not a good thing!

However, with some molecular distillation processes, a very high powered vacuum is used which allows for the distillation to occur at temperatures well below the threshold for rancidity and trans fat formation.

So, nice try, but no cigar!
  2. Our pure fish oil comes from the cleanest waters on the planet.

Can I just say, this sounds reasonable but sorry to have to report that even in the most pristine waters scientists have discovered Mercury, DDT, PCB's, and xeno-estrogens. Here are some really hard truths.

    • In Brazil, the government allows gold miners to use tons of mercury every year to help mine and separate gold. The mercury runs into the Amazon River, which in turn runs into the Atlantic Ocean and eventually into all our water systems.
    • In South America, there are some nations that have no restrictions on the use of DDT. In addition, the U.S. government allows DDT to be made and sold to other nations.
    • In Alaska, there are hundreds of toxic waste dumps buried along the coastline. Most Alaskans are totally unaware of this. Fishermen that are catching fish and shellfish are unaware of these toxins seeping undoubtedly into those pristine waters??!!!
    • Scientists have gone to the North Pole and found pesticides and industrial chemicals. There are no people, no industry, no villages, and no farms at the North Pole. Yet toxins created in populated areas have made their way to one of the most desolate places on earth.
    • At the South Pole, farm pesticides and industrial chemicals have been found in the fatty tissues of penguins.

Clean pure water simply no longer exists anywhere on the planet!

3. You need a blend of omega 3's not just EPA/DHA.

Here's the real scoop on that. Research is showing that DHA and EPA, combined in the amount of 1000 mg, and not other omega 3's are the ones that are supportive of brain and heart health.

Flaxseed which is tauted by some companies that have a blend of omega's, contain alpha ALA.

The problem with this omega is that it must then be converted to DHA and EPA by enzymes. Only 5% of flaxseed is converted to EPA and 0-2% is converted to DHA. So it is nearly impossible to get adequate amounts of EPA/DHA from flaxseed.

Other omega products may contain other types of fats, including omega 6's. It makes no sense to add more when you are getting too many omega 6's in your diet already as a result of eating meat and farmed fish that is grain fed and many grains, soybeans and seed oils.

This imbalance of omega 6's to 3's (30 to 1) is causing problems, especially concerning your heart and brain health.

It makes sense to supplement only with DHA/EPA (which have documented health benefits) and not adding more of something that is already causing us health problems or is not well absorbed!

Protect Yourself against fish oil's dirty little secret

NSF certification is the answer

Results from a study published in 1998 indicate that tests of 44 different fish oil supplement brands sold in 15 countries between 1994 and 1995 revealed appreciable quantities of organochlorines including PCBs and pesticide residues.

To ensure that your fish oil is free of contaminants and contains what the label says buying a product with the NSF label on it is the best solution.

The ace of all of the certifications available for nutrition products is -- being approved for NSF Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP) certification.

Here's why.

NSF International is an independent, not-for-profit organization. This body of audit and inspection is one of the most comprehensive and quality driven initiatives in the nutrition industry.

There goal is to make the world a safer place for consumers.

They work hard to make sure that you don't have to question the safety -- or quality -- of your product,

Very few companies can boast this claim.

  • This tells you that they have, at great expense, gone the extra mile to achieve excellence.
  • This ensures that everything from the choice of ingredients to the testing of the final product meets the highest standards in the industry today

If you are looking for the best fish oil supplement look for the black insignia on the label with the letters NSF.

This is the pure fish oil product that I recommend with a NSF certification. It will be the 3rd product in the rotation (Essential source omega 3).

It also has a 180 day money back guarantee and is very affordable.

I’m still searching for answers on fish oil, and you gave me something’s to possibly rethink.

I know what molecular distillation is but what is Molecular differentiation?

Isn’t true during molecular distillation they use temperatures over 400 degrees?

Do you think it is possible for a vegan to be healthy and have healthy children since all there fats come from a vegetarian source?

Hi Mark,

The beauty of NFS certification is that you have the guarantee that what the label says is in there is really in there, nothing less, nothing more.

The fish oil I mention in my video, is distilled at a very low temperature that does not cause the fatty acids to be changed into trans fats. Guaranteed! You get EPA and DHA omega 3's. If it was different the label could not call it that. NFS would not put their mark on this label!

I have not heard that molecular distillation causes the formation of trans fats. That does not mean some companies looking to cut corners may not be using high temperatures that damage these fragile oils.

As a dietitian and nutritionist, I have to say I have concerns about vegan diets. I understand the concern with eating meat, etc. I have the same concerns. I now only feed my family very limited amounts of grass fed meat and pastured chicken, wild caught fish etc. You can check out my web site http://www.breakthrough-to-wellness.com for more information.

Thanks for this great question. Feel free to contact me at my web site for further questions.

Hey, this is really useful. Thanks. Now as soon as I go home, I am going to check out what my fish oil bottle says. I am a big fan of fish oil, but it is good to make sure I am getting the best.

Hi Dianne! I like to do my research before making any purchase. I thank you for the information you have given and I am actually considering the product, Essential Source Omega 3. However, I found that this product is not NSF certified according to Manntech website and NSF website. It might be a good thing to change your comment as a bit of credibility was taken away when I found out it was not NSF certified. Thank you!
